The IASO Thessalias Obstetrics Department offers a photography service for your baby, allowing you to keep the first moments of his/her life forever. It is a package of ten (10) photographs from the nursery room of your obstetrics clinic floor that record the first days of your baby's life.
Photographs are taken by a professional photographer with absolute respect for the newborns and in compliance with safety rules (without the use of flash or other electronic devices). The service is optional and offered at a low cost.
IASO Thessalias, in addition to carrying out the tests stipulated by the Child Health Institute (congenital hypothyroidism, phenylketonuria, absence of the G-6-PD enzyme, Lapp lactase deficiency), offers the possibility for the performance of special screening tests on neonates:
- Neonate hearing screening
Otoacoustic emissions are performed during the neonate’s stay at the Clinic to accurately detect potential hearing problems. Normal hearing in the first months of a baby's life is a basic precondition for understanding language and learning to talk. It is a painless, reliable and brief method that is performed by highly qualified ENT specialists.
- Expanded Newborn Screening for Metabolic Diseases
Nowadays expanded newborn screening is a globally established practice of neonate screening for potential latent metabolic diseases The term latent means that newborns do not show any clinical signs and therefore these diseases cannot be diagnosed at birth or during the first days of his/her life.
In Greece today, contrary to most countries in Europe and the USA, newborns are screened by the Child Health Institute for only 4 metabolic diseases: Phenylketonuria, absence of the G6PD, hypothyroidism and Lapp lactose deficiency. The expanded newborn screening performed at IASO Thessalias can detect 40 additional metabolic and other diseases some of which are relatively frequently in the Greek population including cystic fibrosis, partial or total biotinidase or adrenal glands hyperplasia. Apart from the above, the screening can detect rarer diseases such as fatty acid, amino acid and organic acid metabolism disorders. According to international statistics, the odds of a child being affected are 1 in 1500 for all the aforementioned diseases.
The Clinic offers a variety of prenatal services throughout pregnancy including free “Obstetric Care during childbirth and postpartum" and “Maternal Art” classes. These classes include detailed information on the birth process, nutritional advice and psychological preparation of the expectant mother, and a brief tour of the Clinic. Furthermore, the Clinic’s experienced midwives provide information and advice on everything a mother needs to know about how to care for her baby and the benefits of breastfeeding.
